Can I submit my academic IELTS score in lieu of General Training or is it mandatory to provide IELTS pertaining to GT for a skilled worker immigration? Any pointers are welcome.

Hi I am a new participant. I liked the way forum works. I am looking for someones help in my matter of application. I am currently doing PhD in United states for last 4 years. I have had Research Assistantship for 4 years ( 20 hrs per week). I am keenly interested in applying for canadian PR card. Can any one tell me whether the 4 years RA will be considered equal to 1 year of full time work experience ? Should i apply for PR card now or should wait until i finish PhD and do a job full time of 1 year ?

I know the opportunity is better in USA but
1. I think i can sponser my family in canada , which will make family reuion much faster
2. Getting a green card in US will be more expensive ( about 7000 USD) and takes a little bit more time ( now i am on F-1 then i get H-1 for may be 3-4 years then the green card )
3. Without green card i can see that there are far less no of jobs in USA PhD's ( in life sciences ) , most of them are post doctoral positions , i think if once o get canadian PR atleast residency status wont be a hinderence in getting a job in canada
4. My wife is dependent on me right now , she cant work on F-2 as well as on H-4 but may be in canada after PR card she would also be able to work
Do u think these are good reasons to think about getting a PR card of canada ? If u know any major drawbacks please share those so that i can plan a little bit better

Thats what i wanted to see in ur reply dude. I am also sailing on the same boat and I am also considering going Canada a better option that staying in USA. Why dont you apply for post doc in canada, this will give you a candian education as well. now I come to your query. I think as you have worked for 4 years as RA your exp would be counted as of 2 years. You Can apply for PR cos U are eligible for that. N I want to tll you one thing rules for skilled worker have been changed now and If you qualification falls under high skilled worker category only then U will get PR now. I hope this helps

Regarding your point of getting a PR only for a high skilled worker category - i dont know if i fall into that or not - in case if you know a little better about it then help me asses - I am veterinarian (DVM ) from india year 2003. And then straight to US for PhD in Neurosciences. But as far as work experience goes your reply is indeed of great help. Thanks

This is still not clear to anybody what professions will fall under most demanding fields. U shold wait till the end of this year because all the applications are on hold right now because the decision is yet to come.

No - it's not safe.
If you send your passport via FedEx from Pakistan you will go bald, all your teeth will fall out, you'll find your eyeballs turning purple and you will have this undeniable urge to do the chicken dance everyday at 12:17PM

Geez...start your own thread instead of spamming & thread jacking other people's threads.

tina from philippines -

i think you can apply from either philippines or china, if you've lived in china legally at least one year. i would check the current application processing times and consider how much faster it will be to file from manila vs beijing.

i am a filipino citizen but living in the US. i applied in the US and it took 1 1/2 years to get my PR visa from the date i filed my app. last time i checked, app time in philippines is 5 yrs.

rink -

i think the general training is needed for skilled worker app. but the instructions from CIC specific to IELTS should indicate accordingly. you should doublecheck your instructions.
