We received a letter today asking us to pay the RPR fee of $490 within 30 days. I had no idea that we actually had to pay more on top of the $550 + $75 we've already paid!
I've looked through the boards a bit but I can't find mention of this fee. What exactly is going on now that we've been requested to pay this fee?
Here's my timeline so far for reference:
Feb 20 - Sent application to CIC-M Feb 22 - Application received by CIC-M Mar 17 - Approved to sponsor Mar 17 - Application sent to Manila Mar 25 - Manila started processing Mar 25 - Received letter from CIC-M Apr 04 - Passport requested Apr 18 - RPR fee requested

Funny thing though is that my wife is still with me in Canada and she won't be sending her passport to Manila until the second week of May!
We were joking that she'll be able to turn around and come back to Canada once she gets to Japan. This process is going SO much faster than either of us had ever imagined. I guess it helps that my wife has been to Canada 6 times before. Twice to study English and once she lived here for 6 months with her family while her parents worked in Canada.

Look here: https://services3.cic.gc.ca/efee/efee.do Choose Immigration Applications for Persons Outside Canada. Then click: To Calculator. The very first item is the RPRF (Right of Permanent Resident Fee), then you look down and see $75 and $475. (Basically, you should have the first 3 boxes checked off, as long as there are no other fees applicable to your case). These fees are for The sponsorship application (yours), the principle applicant (Your wife). The total cost is: $1040.00
If you paid the $550.00 fee, they owe you a refund of $75.00.
Also, I think Manila often asks for passports in the early stages, so please don't get your hopes up that they will be issuing you a visa right away. I hope they will, but I just want to prepare you for the fact they may not.

From this website: http://www.canadaimmigrationlaw.net/Immigration/FAQ/government_fees.htm
Comes the definition of the RPR fee:
"It is to be paid by any person 22 years of age or over who is granted permanent residence in Canada."
Things are looking good, wouldn't you say? Besides, even if my wife is given her visa two or three months after she goes back to Japan, it's not a huge deal.
I realize that you're trying to help though.
As for the fees, I mixed up the totals. I paid $75 and my wife paid $475 for a total of $550. No refund.

Yeah buddy, it's hurting on the wallet, isn't it? That's why I paid it right away so that our application will not be delayed and while I had $, lol. |
