I know for common-law, it is the norm or requirement but for those of you who are married and will be filing or have done so before, did you or will you get letters of support from family members friends? I know it wouldn't hurt to have these letters but how much of an impact do you think this is? We were married in September last year and been together since march 2007 and have one child. We do have pics, joint account, lease etc. Our relatives are scattered all over and it will be somewhat of a task to get letters. Opinions/advice well appreciated

In the Applicants Check list it states:
"If you are a common-law or conjugal partner, provide evidence that your relationship is genuine and continuing and has existed for at least 12 months prior to your application. Also provide details of the history of your relationship and at least two statutory declarations from individuals with personal knowledge of your relationship supporting your claim that the relationship is genuine and continuing." However I think even if you are married it will have a Positive Impact on your application as anyone can get married as an attempt to Stay in Canada! Although I am sure thats not your motive CIC are ALWAYS on the look out for such applications! I think if you even collect 2 letters as proof then CIC are more likely to rule your marriage out as bogus a relationship! Anything Positive to add to your application is a GOOD Idea! |

Def not bogus. They are ready to write them. It's just getting them to us. I guess some will have to be mailed because I want their signatures on them. We wanted to mail the app by the end of this mth so I was just thinking about time.

It is always good to have your story "backed up" by friends and family. Have your friends/family scan a copy of their signed letter to you, or simply mail it. My bf family is all in the UK so we just had them scan and email their letters to us. I just made note stating that these are "copy of letter from so and so". |

I got a couple of them to show as proof of us knowing each other for 3 years, and living together. We didn't have a joint lease so we got one from a roommate. And we didn't have proof going back 3 years so we got a letter from a mutual friend saying she's known about us for 3 years and is excited to see us together and getting married.
Hopefully it helps. Anything to get us through quickly! |

I agree scanned letters are a good idea if its a matter of time! My family live in the UK and its helpful to back up your story as much as possible. I have included 3 from my family in the UK - Dad, dad's common-law partner, sister and 4 from my husbands family in Canada, joint one from his mum and dad signed by Commission of Oaths, One from his sister signed by Commission of Oaths (these people have had most contact with us in the past 4 1/2 years) one from his Aunt and one from his Cousin.
