Canada immigration candidates should take note of new rankings highlighting the best cities in the country for integrating newcomers.
The Ontario cities of Oshawa and London, St John’s in Newfoundland & Labrador, plus St John in New Brunswick have topped an index for immigration to Canada that has been seven years in the making.
The results are part of the Canadian Index for Measuring Integration, which compares the lives of newcomers against native-born Canadians. The idea behind the index is to assess what the best scoring cities are doing right.
With so many factors affecting how someone fits it, those behind the Canada immigration index, which is funded by the Canadian federal government, have faced a painstaking process in putting it together.

They narrowed it down to four main factors, namely economic, health, social and civic and democratic participation.
Oshawa came out on top for economics, London for health, St John’s for social and St John for civic and democratic participation.
A key part of Canada immigration policy is how to quickly integrate newcomers when they arrive.
Evidence shows that new immigrants are an initial draw on a country’s resources, but over time immigration to Canada provides a measurable benefit to economies and societies.
Reducing the gap to when immigrants begin contributing is the central aim of projects like the Canadian Index for Measuring Integration.
Integrating economic immigrants specifically chosen for their skills and experience is one thing, but with more than 40,000 Syrian refugees welcomed to Canada since November 2015, the challenge of bringing these individuals from difficult backgrounds into society is acutely more difficult.
With thousands of refugee immigration candidates reaching their one-year anniversaries in Canada every day, their special government funding or private sponsorship is ending and the onus is on them to find their own way.
Done properly, a tool such as the Canadian Index for Measuring Integration can provide a model of best practices that can have a tangible benefit to the Canadian economy in the long term.
