Preparing for a Selection Interview

DISCLAIMER:

The following has been prepared by Colin R. Singer, Attorney At Law, for the intended reference by interested individuals and is not intended to create an attorney-client communication. This writing may be reproduced for the personal non commercial use of interested individuals on the express or implied condition that the contents herein are neither edited, modified nor altered in whole or in part, directly or indirectly without the express written consent of the author herein.

At the initial stages of the processing, applicants who are assessed a minimum of 60 units are either interview waived, or interviewed.

Generally an interview would be scheduled to determine inter alia, whether an applicant will demonstrate favorable personal qualities including motivation, initiative, resourcefulness, etc., which are the criteria used to assess personal suitability. The interview may likewise be conducted to ensure the accuracy of the information contained in the documentation submitted; to confirm an applicant possesses the necessary means to settle in Canada; to verify the absence of security inadmissibility's; to ensure the applicant is intending to enter the Canadian labor market in an "open" occupation; to verify whether there are sufficient grounds to exercise positive discretion in the event the total assessment is short of the required cut off of 70 units.

Prior to an interview, applicants are encouraged to acquire a sufficient knowledge of the Canadian labor market with respect to their intended occupation in Canada. Efforts should be undertaken to:

  • Identify positions listed on applicable job related newsgroups;
  • Become familiar with the location of related positions and the applicable market conditions including required qualifications and remunerative benefits offered;
  • Ensure language skills are commensurate with the requirements of the intended occupation.

Applicants are advised to bring to the interview, all original documents supporting the application; certificates of non criminal conviction; evidence of settlement funds.

Applicants who are interviewed should take note of the interviewer's name and maintain a brief summary of the questions and answers exchanged during the interview, in the event that same does not proceed favorably. Such information may prove important in the event an applicant proceeds to contest a negative decision.
