The Association for Canadian Studies has issued a new report which reveals that the percentage of bilingual immigrants arriving in Quebec is on the rise. The rate is almost five times that of ten years ago.
The province, like the rest of Canada, is also refusing more immigrants who are unable to speak either official language. Data shows that this trend is helping, rather than hurting, new arrivals to Canada by giving them ‘a better start in their new society, especially in the labour market, where knowledge of English or French is essential to finding a good job.’
Efforts in the rest of the country to attract French-speaking immigrants seem to be working as well, which, in turn, is helping to offset the dwindling francophone communities outside of Quebec.
