Immigration.ca - Canada Immigration News - August 2008

The Department of Citizenship and Immigration has allocated over $2.2 million in funding toward resettlement programs in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The Government will also provide $2 million in funds to Regina, Saskatchewan and another $390,000 to be given to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

The funding will go directly to programs in the cities that service immigrants in their resettlement process, such as language programs and employment placement services.

In recent years, the province has experienced a dramatic increase in immigration rates. Organizations such as the Saskatoon Open Door Society, which provide a range of resettlement services to immigrants within the community, have been challenged in keeping up with the growing demand.

“The new funding will assist us to meet the growing demand for language training, ongoing settlement and integration support for family and youth, HOST programming, settlement support in schools to enhance retention and integration of newcomers in Saskatoon,” said the Open Door’s Executive Director Bertha Gana.

In total, the province of Saskatchewan will receive over $5.5 million in resettlement funds over the next year.
