Immigration.ca - Canada Immigration News - December 2008

According to the latest statistics, the Philippines have become Canada’s largest immigrant source.

Prior to 2007, China had been the largest immigrant source for several years. China still accounts for the highest number of new permanent residents each year, though the overall total did decrease slightly from 2006.

In the past year the numbers of temporary workers from the Philippines skyrocketed and, when combined with the number of new permanent residents each year (third overall), the nation became the overall new top source for Canada.

Experts are citing a recent economic boom in China as well as the Canadian Government’s increased focus on temporary workers as the main reasons for the shifting numbers.

“Fewer Chinese workers are coming in because of the economic boom there, and we are filling service-sector jobs with Filipinos,” said Jack Jedwab, head of the Association for Canadian Studies.

Temporary workers from the Philippines are most often recruited for teaching, nursing and caregiving positions in Canada.
