The Conservative Government is revisiting a previously proposed immigration amendment that would allow visa officers to reject temporary work permit applications in certain sectors.
The new amendment is being touted by the Conservatives as a way to “prevent abuse before it even begins” for temporary foreign workers such as nannies or strippers, who are more vulnerable to exploitation.
“The amendments will help further our agenda of increasing protections for temporary foreign workers by preventing situations from happening in the very first place.” said Conservative MP Rona Ambrose.
Critics of the legislation argue that the rule change will only make things more difficult for foreigners wishing to enter the country, as it is the workers and not the employers who will be most affected.
The idea was previously introduced to Parliament in a bill that failed to move ahead because an election was called in October.
