Alberta considers controversial solution to labour shortages

Immigration.ca - Canada Immigration News - March 2007

Labour shortages in Alberta's hospitality industry have prompted the proposal of some unorthodox solutions. The latest being to allow minors aged 12 to 17 to work in restaurants and, more controversially, in bars and nightclubs.

The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission has already recently altered its regulations to allow minors to work specifically in areas of bars and nightclubs where alcohol is not served. Under increasing pressure from the Canadian Restaurant and Food Services Association, the commission is now considering expanding the new regulations to allow underage teens to serve alcohol as well.

Many high-profile business owners in the province are taking a stand against such a move, asking if the labour shortage has really reached this much of a crisis level. Alberta Premier Ed Stalmach has also taken a stand against the proposed rule change. However, a solution is still required if the province wishes to avoid closing many profitable business in the industry.
