The labour shortage in Regina, Saskatchewan has required policy-makers to do some thinking outside of the box. Pat Fiaco, mayor of Saskatchewan's capital, is hoping that sending a special envoy to Alberta and British Columbia will lure much-needed people to fill positions.
More than 40 employers are travelling to various places throughout Alberta and B.C. to promote Regina as a great place to work and live. Alberta's recent labour shortage attracted many people from across the country including Saskatchewan. This has left gaps in the workforce that need to be addressed which is just what Regina is doing with it's "Think Regina" campaign consisting of these companies, appearances by Fiaco and a website.
Fiaco knows that recruiting from the Western provinces will not be enough. "I'm not suggesting for a minute that coming to Calgary is going to be the answer," he said. "[but] immigration is going to be a big part of filling out many of those jobs."
