The province of Saskatchewan has announced the start of the “Partners in Settlement and Integration” Program in Yorkton, which will assist new arrivals in their resettlement.
The program is a joint initiative between the Saskatchewan Abilities Council and the Provincial Government’s Immigration Unit within the Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour.
Saskatchewan has recently seen an economic boom that has brought it to the forefront of to immigration to ease their labour needs.
Christ Wyatt, the Mayor of Yorkton has confidence in the new program’s ability to assist newcomers, which will, in turn, bridge the gab between them and prospective employers.
“(Immigrants) are going to need places to stay,” said Wyatt. “But they also need people to help them get acclimated to the community itself and sometimes the language is a barrier or the customs or just day-to-day life issues and this will be helpful in that way.”
The new program will provide assistance through employer networking as well as providing volunteer-driven services and building immigrant community outreach and support systems. The program will also introduce a regional coordinator to help organize a more cohesive policy throughout the area.
