Alberta has now joined Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia among the list of provinces who have signed labour agreements with the Philippines.
The province has just announced a "Memorandum of Understanding" that is intended to facilitate the process of bringing workers into Alberta from the Philippines.
Upon announcing the deal, representatives from both the provincial government and the Filipino government stressed their intent to prioritize not only the labour flow into Alberta, but also the need to protect workers from exploitation and abuse.
"This Memorandum of Understanding will pave the way for the orderly and ethical recruitment of Filipino workers into Alberta," said Filipino Secretary of Labour and Employment Marianito Roque. "It also provides a way for our two governments to jointly address our workers' concerns about living and working in Alberta."
Included in the agreement is a strictly stipulated policy against any recruitment fees charged to Filipino workers who want to come to Alberta.
The agreement also outlines a plan to share information, explore credential recognition possibilities and promote Alberta opportunities.
The province hopes that the deal will help to build upon the 6,000 temporary Filipino workers that arrived in Alberta in 2007.
