More and more Canadians and immigrants are moving away from Ontario and Quebec, according to the latest statistics released this month.
New figures from Statistics Canada show that in the second quarter of this year, although the two largest provinces have experienced a net growth in population, they saw almost 7,500 residents migrate either out West or East to the Maritimes.
Most inter-provincial moves were to Alberta and Saskatchewan, the latter of which now has just surpassed the one million mark in population for the first time in over two decades.
Immigrants are also showing an increased tendency to settle away from the traditional most popular choices of Quebec and Ontario, in most cases to pursue better career opportunities. Prince Edward Island welcomed 850 immigrants in that same time frame, thanks to a more aggressive international recruitment campaign, as well as the Provincial Nominee Program.
On the whole Canada’s population grew 0.36 per cent thanks to increases in immigration and birth rates.
