Canada Immigration News Articles - Sept 2006

Michael Ignatieff, the current frontrunner to become Canada's next official opposition leader, has put forward a proposal to increase the amount of immigrants accepted into Canada each year.

This increase would come via the expansion of Canada’s Family Class Sponsorship program. The program, which currently allows Canadians to sponsor parents, grandparents, and dependent children, would be expanded under Ignatieff’s plan to also include siblings.

Mr. Ignatieff has indicated that he would like to see “at least” 350,000 immigrants every year, a substantial increase from the current levels of 235,000.

The candidate also blasted the current immigration process as being to slow, too cumbersome, unable to match qualifications with skill shortages, and not doing enough to help professionals qualify for practice in Canada.

National Post, September 16, 2006.
