The Alberta government has launched an aggressive recruiting campaign in the United States, aimed at skilled foreign workers who are waiting for their residency.
The campaign is costing the province an estimated $500,000 with ads running in several major U.S. cities including Washington, San Francisco, Boston, Houston and Chicago. They are hoping to attract foreign professionals who are in the U.S. and are years away from receiving their American permanent residency status.
The advertisements are promising workers a much shorter wait time for residency, only six to 18 months through the Provincial Nominee Program. Last year, Alberta’s PNP failed to reach the targeted numbers of immigrant fast-tracking and the government has been increasing efforts to meet the targets for this year.
The government is accepting nurses, engineers, accountants and other professionals who hold working visas and have at least one year of experience in the U.S. They have already received 65 full applications and have nominated eight workers through the PNP. There are currently an estimated 40,000 job vacancies in the province.
