The Canadian Government has announced that it will begin accepting and processing applications under the new Canadian Experience Class starting September 17, 2008.
The new class is intended to attract and retain foreign workers and students, and will allow people with experience living and working in Canada to apply for permanent resident status without leaving the country.
The government hopes that by placing value upon an applicant’s experience, more immigrants with proven adaptability will want to stay in Canada permanently. The Canadian Experience Class is the first stream of immigration that will directly reward applicants for their accomplishments in Canada.
Previous to the new policy, temporary workers and students had to apply for permanent residency from outside of Canada. However the majority of applicants who retained temporary study or work status were routinely interview waived and thus the new immigration class will have minimal practical effect on the current immigration program.
