Immigration.ca - Canada Immigration News - September 2008

The Premier of Saskatchewan visited Toronto this week in an attempt to attract skilled immigrant workers to his province.

Premier Brad Wall was in Thorncliffe Park, a low-income community in Toronto with a high proportion of visible minorities. He is hoping that his appearance there will inspire newcomers to think beyond the traditional immigrant destinations of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

The province of Saskatchewan has experienced a major economic boom in recent years. It is expected to lead the nation in GDP growth this year at 4.2 per cent. Premier Wall and the Saskatchewan government are aiming to attract workers to fill some of the current vacancies – workers whose credentials are not being recognized and whose skills are not being utilized in other regions of Canada such as Toronto.

Further to this end, this week 50 employers from the province will participate at a National Job Fair in Toronto as part of a recruitment campaign. They are offering the promise of high wages and skilled positions to “underemployed” immigrants.

“We are a ‘have’ province,” said Minister of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Rob Norris of Saskatchewan. “The most valuable resource we have is human resource.”
