The Ontario city of Guelph will receive just under half a million dollars towards a new “Local Immigration Partnership Initiative”, the government announced this month.
The funding, approximately $459,000 will go toward building a council that will oversee development and operations of local resettlement service programs. The council members will include municipal politicians, as well as other key community figures.
Guelph has been a destination for almost 7,000 immigrants in the past ten years. The funding to the city is part of a larger financial partnership between the federal government and the provincial government of Ontario toward immigrant services.
“We are very pleased that, with the support of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, we will be able to develop an integrated, coordinated strategy to make Guelph and Wellington a more welcoming place for newcomers to Canada and our community,” said Karen Farbridge, the Mayor of Guelph upon the announcement.
