Canada Immigration Blog: Commentaries on Canadian Immigration Issues by Colin R. Singer

Upon return from our family vacation in the early new year, I sat down to catch up on the recent news stories. I came across two interesting developments in the immigration field. First, I learned that a new immigration Minister, Diane Finley, an MP from Ontario, was appointed to replace the now former Minister who had only held the position for just under one year.

Our Featured Family Placement Profile: The Groves

Driving On the Other Side of the Pond

Change is not easy. No one knows that better than Long Haul driver Dean Grove. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, Grove and his wife decided to relocate to Canada. But the risk that goes with change seems to have been worth it.

Dean Grove spent his entire life in Evesham, Worcestershire, England. He graduated high school, and worked at several different jobs before obtaining his Class 1 license in 1988 and settling into a successful career as a truck driver. He enjoyed an active life in England with his wife Julie and their three children.

In April 2005, Grove planned a ski trip to Sunshine Village in Alberta, Canada. Needless to say, the experience made a lasting impression. “Everyone makes you feel welcome; it’s a clean country; there is more opportunity for the children- they can have more here than they could ever have in England”, explains Grove. The more he thought about it, the more Grove realized that he had little to lose and so much to gain. The timing was perfect with his children at an age where they could still start over. Grove did not want to spend the rest of his life haunted by what-ifs. “What’s the worst thing that can happen?” he says, “We go back to the life we left behind”, he reasoned.

Luckily, it looks like that will not be necessary. Grove and his family arrived in Lethbridge, Alberta in July 2006 and there has been no looking back. Naturally, the improvement in their finances has been a big plus for Grove. The family lives just as well, if not better on one income in Canada than they did on two incomes back in England. “My favourite thing over here is being able to afford to do things as a family. For example, we can all go ice skating for $8 or watch a movie for $15” says Grove. Grove is delighted to see his family is adjusting better than he expected. “They have all been made to feel very welcome in their new home”, he marvels.

Naturally, there have been challenges to overcome. For Grove, the biggest was the driving itself. It took some getting used to but with the help and welcoming attitudes of his co-workers and with a bit of patience, Grove made the adjustment. For those out there thinking of relocating to Canada, Grove had this message to share: “Anyone coming to Canada will enjoy the lifestyle. The motto here is work hard play hard. There is so much to do and see and it is all on your doorstep. All that’s required is the courage and the planning to get up behind the wheel and go for it.”
