The Main Duties
All the managers in this unit group would need to perform all or some of the following duties:
-
Planning, organising, directing, controlling and evaluating the delivery of social and community service programs such as income maintenance, children’s aid and emergency housing services
-
Managing the operations and activities of social and community centres, correctional facilities and detention centres
-
Administering the programs of non-governmental organisations involved with various social issues such as health care, human rights, consumer protection, international development and environmental protection
-
Administering programs of membership organisations such as political parties, labour organisations, business and professional associations
-
Establishing administrative procedures for meeting the objectives set by the board of directors or senior management
-
Directing and advising professional and non-professional staff delivering services and programs to the general public and to the organisation or association membership
-
Planning, administering and controlling the budgets for programs, equipment and support services
-
Representing their respective organisations for the purpose of government liaison and media relations
-
Participating in policy development by preparing reports and briefs for management committees and working groups and,
-
Hiring and providing training for professional and non-professional staff
The Employment Requirements
The authorities require that managers in social, community and correctional services possess a master’s degree in a social science or an administrative discipline. In addition, these individuals would need to have several years of experience in a related occupation such as:

A community and social service worker

A social or health policy researcher
-
A consultant or a program officer
-
A probation or parole officer or,
-
A social worker
Similarly, managers of associations and membership organisations would need to have extensive experience in related occupations, trades or industries.
Additional Information
These individuals could progress to senior management positions in social, community and correctional services with additional training and experience.
