The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) is comprised of four streams: The Employer-Driven Stream, the Strategic Recruitment Stream, the Family Stream and the Self-Employed Farmer Stream.

  • Employer-Driven Stream

    • Skilled Worker Category This category targets candidates with a permanent full-time job offer from an Alberta employer in a skilled occupation (must be classified as skill level “0”, “A” or “B” in the National Occupational Classification).
    • International Graduate Category This category is aimed at those having completed a two-year post-secondary program in Canada. They must secure full-time permanent employment in Alberta and must have been on post-graduate work permit for at least 6 months.
    • Semi-Skilled Worker Category This category encompasses the food and beverage processing industry, the hotel and lodging industry, the manufacturing industry, the trucking industry and the food services industry. For this final category, a positive Labour Market Opinion is required, as well as sufficient work experience, English language abilities and education.

  • Strategic Recruitment Stream

    • Compulsory Trades Category
In order to qualify under this category, candidates must receive an invitation letter from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) which is provided upon successful completion of the Qualification Certificate Examination(s) for the Compulsory Trade. In addition, candidates must be either currently working in Alberta in their trade or worked in Alberta in their trade within the last two years. The processing time for the provincial portion of the application is seven months.
    • Engineering Occupations Category
Candidates must be currently residing in Alberta and have experience as an engineer, designer or drafter. They must be currently working in Alberta (or have worked in Alberta within the last two years) for a company member of Consulting Engineers of Alberta or a well established Alberta Engineering, Procurement and Construction Company. The processing time for the provincial portion of the application is seven months.
    • U.S. Visa Holder Category
This category targets those who are temporary workers in the USA (H-1B, H-1C or E-3) with one year of working experience in the USA. Their occupation must be on the AINP Occupations Under Pressure List for the Strategic Recruitment Stream - U.S. Visa Holder Category. The list is updated based on Alberta’s labour needs.

  • Family Stream

This stream was introduced in June 2008, and the regulations were amended in September 2009 (the became more stringent following the amendments). It is a way for Alberta residents to assist family members, with the skills and abilities needed to succeed in Alberta’s labour market, for immigration to the province. Processing times are significantly longer for this stream; they are currently at 38 months for the provincial portion of the application.

  • Self-Employed Farmer Stream

This stream is designed to assist owner/operators with proven management skills and significant financial resources to develop a sustainable growth oriented farming business in Alberta. They must invest a minimum of $500 000 of equity in a farming enterprise in Alberta and must have a minimum net worth of $500 000.
