Individuals wishing to settle in Yukon and become Canadian permanent residents can apply through two categories; the Yukon Business Nominee Program or through the Skilled Worker/Critical Impact Worker Program.

  • Yukon Business Nominee Program

Under this category, candidates can apply as entrepreneurs or as self-employed individuals.

    • Entrepreneur

In order to qualify, applicants must have a personal net worth of at least $250 000, make an investment of at least $150 000, demonstrate reasonable knowledge of Yukon and its economy as well as reasonable communication skills, necessary experience and education to successfully implement business plan. There is a list of priority industries, but business plans are not required to be restricted to one of the industries identified.

    • Self-Employed

This stream is intended for professionals who can provide a service which is in demand, such as doctors, nurses, electrical engineers and electronic engineers. The applicant must have reasonable communication skills and reasonable knowledge of Yukon and its economy. In addition, they must create a business plan and have sufficient resources to start and operate a professional practice.

  • Skilled Worker/Critical Impact Worker Program

    • Skilled Worker

This stream is employer-driven and designed to assist Yukon employers, sectors or governments to identify and nominate potential qualified immigrants to fill positions that cannot be filled by territorial or national labour markets. The positions offered must be classified as skill level “0”, “A” or “B” in the NOC. The employer must prove that they haven’t been able to fill the position. The offer of employment must be permanent full-time and the applicant must be able to conduct basic communication in English or French. The processing time for the territorial portion of the application is six weeks.

    • Critical Impact Worker

This program, which will be in place until March 2011, is designed to increase the labour pool for entry level jobs in the hospitality and service sectors in order to address the critical need of semi-skilled workers in the territory. Positions targetted are those which are classified as skill level “C” and “D” in the NOC. Applicants must have a work permit or have already worked in the position for six months.
