June 13, 2017 – Canada’s new Global Talent Stream (GTS) will keep the country competitive as well as create jobs for Canadians, federal government ministers say.
The new Temporary Foreign Worker Program stream, launched on June 12, 2017, is designed to help companies grow and thrive, as well as transfer innovative skills to Canadians.
No longer will technology companies have to wait months and years to access top talent. Under GTS, those workers can be processed for Canada work permits in two weeks, offering a flexibility Canadian companies have never known.

Canada Launches New Global Talent Stream
Innovation Minister Navdeep Bain said: “The Global Skills Strategy will allow Canadian employers, who are investing in people and skills here in Canada, to continue to grow by attracting top talent from around the world.
“Whether it’s developing a new product line or leading a new sales team, bringing in the best and the brightest from around the world will result in more good-quality, middle-class jobs for Canadians.”
Under the Global Talent Stream, companies are required to develop a Labour Market Benefits Plan (LMBP) in partnership with the government before they can access the fast-track work permit.
A company can be referred by an approved organization, or bring in talent from a list of occupations in demand under the two categories of the stream.
This requirement to benefit Canada, either through job creation or knowledge transfer, is central to the Global Skills Strategy, under which the GTS falls.
“Employers that are making plans for job-creating investments in Canada will often need an experienced leader, dynamic researcher or an innovator with unique skills not readily available in Canada to make that investment happen,” said Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen.
“The Global Skills Strategy aims to give those employers confidence that when they need to hire from abroad, they’ll have faster, more reliable access to top talent.”
