Teachers in New Brunswick were overwhelmed by the sudden influx of Syrian refugee students earlier this year leading to chaos in some classrooms, according to a report.
Schools were not prepared for new students who hadn’t been educated regularly for years, did not speak English and came from war-torn areas of the Middle East.
The result was a whirlwind of poor behaviour, bullying and problems surrounding gender roles as teachers were left to deal with a difficult adjustment phase often without the help of translators.
Refugees in numbers

School staff said they had no idea how many students would be arriving meaning preparation was impossible and all teachers could do was react to the situation as it developed.
Only when extra teachers were added to help cope was the situation brought under control. Even more staff are expected to be added in the fall.
The problems arose as Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government delivered on its campaign promise to welcome 25,000 Syrian refugees across Canada.
Officials admitted there were hiccups during the push to bring in so many immigrants in such a short time, but declared the operation a success.
Canada received the highest number of immigrants for at least 45 years in the first three months of 2016, according to the latest figures.
A Statistics Canada report shows 86,216 new immigrants entered the country between January 1 and April 1. The figure was driven by Syrians, with a current total of 28,755 welcomed into the country.
Canada has been singled out as an example to the world following some global political surprises over the last few months.
Donald Trump is set to be the Republican nominee for president of the United States, while Britain voted to leave the European Union in a recent referendum. Both campaigns were run with a strong anti-immigration message.
Meanwhile, Canadian society continues to foster a positive approach towards immigration.
Immigration Minister John McCallum has had to deal with complaints because he has too many Canadians lining up to sponsor and not enough refugees.
