Appendix H – National Occupational Classification (NOC) 4413: Elementary and Secondary School Teacher Assistants
Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants typically support students. They assist teachers and counsellors with teaching and non-instructional tasks as well. Moreover, they assist in areas of personal care, teaching and behaviour management too. However, they carry out these tasks under the supervision of teachers or other child care professionals. They usually find employment in public and private elementary, secondary and special needs schools and treatment centres.

The Main Duties
Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants would typically perform some or all of the following duties:
Assisting students with integration into the classroom and school setting
Helping students individually or in small groups with assignments and reinforcing learning and retention concepts under the supervision of the classroom teachers
Assisting students with special needs by using techniques such as braille, sign language and other remedial programs
Monitoring and reporting student progress to the classroom teachers
Accompanying and supervising students during activities in school gymnasiums, laboratories, libraries, resource centres and on field trips
Assisting teachers in the operation of projectors, tape recorders and other audio visual or electronic equipment
Assisting in the school library or office and performing any other duties assigned by the school principal and,
Monitoring students during the recess, at noon hour or during the day
The Employment Requirements
The authorities require that elementary and secondary school teacher assistants have:
Completed their secondary schooling
Completed the 10-month college program in teaching assistance, educational assistance or any other social science program (applicable to teacher assistants)
Specialised training and experience if they help students with special needs (applicable to teacher assistants who help students having special needs)
Additional Information
As these individuals acquire experience in their fields, they can progress to other occupations pertaining to child care and adolescent supportive instruction.
